Despite missing more than 40 games, Seager helped Shohei Ohtani win the 2023 AL MVP race coming into October. When you consider Seager’s playoff stats, it’s clear why many believe he’ll be a front-runner for the award this autumn.

Regardless of where he stands among MVP contenders, MLB.com feels Seager is the best shortstop moving into 2024, thanks in large part to his offensive productivity.

Seager was first among shortstops in home runs, batting average, OPS, and slugging percentage. His 156 hits ranked fourth, while his 88 runs scored were sixth. He also won his second World Series MVP after hitting.318 with six home runs in the postseason.

Seager, 29, is still one of the best young players in the game. Offensively, he is a steady 30-30 hitter who drives in runs in the middle of the lineup. Defensively, he improved from Year 1 to Year 2 in Arlington, reducing his mistake rate by more than 50%.

Seager recently underwent surgery to treat a sports hernia and is anticipated to miss the majority, if not all, of spring training. The Rangers think he’ll be ready for Opening Day, March 28.

A complete, healthy season for Seager may solidify his standing as the league’s consensus top shortstop, keeping him among the top MVP candidates.
