Longhorns standout earns Big 12 Newcomer of the Week with a message
Austin — Texas Longhorns guard Max Abmas continues to distinguish himself among the Big 12’s top, and he now has additional silverware to show for it.
The Big 12 announced its weekly honors on Monday, and Abmas is once again the conference’s Newcomer of the Week. It is his third accolade of the season, having transferred from Oral Roberts this offseason.
Abmas also received the prize in the weeks of December 18 and January 15.
Abmas is presently leading the Longhorns in scoring (17.9) and second on the team in assists (4.2) as they prepare to face No. 14 Iowa State on Tuesday. He has scored at least ten points in every game this season, ranking third in the conference in points per game and second in 3-pointers made per game (3.0).
Abmas scored Texas’ last 13 points in a 77-66 victory over then-No. 25 TCU on Saturday, including a personal 11-0 run after the game was knotted at 64 with 3:52 remaining. He scored a game-high 21 points.
Abmas has had some of his greatest individual efforts this year, including a season-high 32 points in a defeat to West Virginia on Jan. 13 and 20 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in a win over LSU on Dec. 16. This season, Abmas also nailed two game-winning jumpers in the final 6.2 seconds or fewer against Louisville and Cincinnati.
