JJ Watt has been out of the game for a year, but he acknowledged that he considered returning in 2023.
More intriguingly, Watt genuinely thought about playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans when he was thinking about coming out of retirement.
In advance of Super Bowl 58, Watt made a visit to The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday. McAfee wanted to know if Watt was truly retiring. The defensive end for the Texans and Arizona Cardinals in the past stated that he is “1,000 percent” done with the game, although he did consider returning.
During the 2023 season, Watt disclosed on the podcast that he was “monitoring” the Texans and Steelers.
It should come as no surprise that Watt would consider Houston. There was reason to think that the club could compete, especially with CJ Stroud at quarterback and everything clicking for them. Watt might be a tremendous asset to the defense considering his background and expertise with the squad.
Regarding the Steelers, JJ found it quite alluring to play beside his brother, TJ Watt. The older Watt was so itching to play again that he went to Pittsburgh to see his brother warm up for the game. Luckily for him, the yearning faded quickly.
“It was unquestionably the first time I truly missed playing when I traveled to Pittsburgh to see T.J. and watch him get ready for the game.” Watt disclosed
I experienced all of those feelings before the game, and [T.J.] woke up the next morning injured and in pain; he needs medical attention. And I got up, had a coffee, and took a pleasant stroll.
It would have been intriguing to watch Watt return and either play with his brother or maybe improve the defense for the Texans. Ultimately, though, Watt is content with his choice.
Or, what’s worth saying, it was evident that JJ Watt was satisfied with his performance when he first revealed his retirement plans early in the season.
Even though he didn’t win a Super Bowl during his lengthy and prosperous career, he is remembered as one of the greatest defensive players in league history.
