Despite not being selected for Danny Röhl’s first two games as Wednesday’s manager, center-half Di’Shon Bernard has emerged as a key player for the Owls in recent months, starting 18 of their past 21 league games.
In the 78th minute of Wednesday’s victory over Bristol City, the Jamaican international was sent off for two bookable offenses. Referee Thomas Kirk overruled the incident, allowing play to continue for a Robins attack. He will thus be forced to miss his team’s upcoming game, which is scheduled for next weekend at New York Stadium, since there is no avenue for appeal given the terms of his two-caution punishment.
Fortunately, however, he will not be joining captain Barry Bannan with a total of nine yellow cards for the Championship season; the two yellows are considered a red only, so there is no chance that he will receive an accumulative ban. As of right now, the captain is the only player who faces a longer suspension; if a player receives 10 yellow cards before the 37th game of the season, they will automatically be suspended for two games. On Wednesday, they play the Millers, Plymouth Argyle, and Leeds United before the 37-match amnesty begins, at which point the threat of an accumulative suspension becomes fifteen cautions until the completion of the regular season.
In advance of the trip to Rotherham, Wednesday has a strong back line thanks to the return of Dominic Iorfa and Bambo Diaby from injuries. Iorfa made his first appearance since the beginning of December by coming off the bench in the victory over City. Akin Famewo is also making progress in healing.
