L’Jarius Sneed’s contract discussions have been difficult for the Chiefs these past few days, but the team is expected to apply the franchise tag on the talented cornerback on Monday.
It was anticipated that Kansas City will use the tag on Sneed in order to preserve draft pick compensation in the event of a trade rather than losing him in free agency the following season.
The Chiefs appear to have made at least one significant choice that provides some clarity to the current process while Brett Veach negotiates with Chris Jones and other important free agents.
Although Dianna Russini of The Athletic claims that Kansas City would proceed with Sneed’s franchise tag while the team negotiates with Chris Jones for an extension, the move has not yet been officially announced.
Though there have been some reports on possible trade packages, it seems probable that Sneed will be sold. However, talks may be somewhat derailed by an undisclosed knee ailment.
If a trade doesn’t happen, Sneed’s contract extension with the Chiefs is still conceivable, but it is likely that Kansas City will attempt to win a third consecutive Super Bowl without Sneed’s assistance.
