After splitting with Michael Flynn, Swindon Town appointed the Irishman as interim manager for the end of the current campaign.
In the summer, the League Two team must decide who will be their permanent manager.

According to a Swindon Advertiser story, Austin has said clearly who he wants: “For me, I am here for the season, but Gav is the perfect man for the football club at this moment.” From your perspective, he is familiar with the football team, the players, and the area.

Gavin Gunning: Interim Swindon boss says turning around results is most important - BBC Sport

“Who are we going to invite next? The football team needs constancy in its goals; they don’t need it to become brand-new every time.
Given that he is already familiar with the team and all of the players, it makes sense to go to him before the following term. Whether the hierarchy wants someone with a little bit more experience is all that matters.
After taking command of eight games, he has won two of them, drawn four, and lost two.

With their comfortable mid-table position, the Robins can now focus on their upcoming season and their goal of returning to League One.

Under Scott Lindsey, Gunning joined Swindon in 2022 and has been there ever since, playing a few different positions.
His playing career spanned more than 350 games as a defender, and he retired a few years after his last non-league stint with Chesterfield.

The Dublin native also spent time at Port Vale, Forest Green Rovers, Dundee United, Blackburn Rovers, and other teams.

This weekend, Swindon will return to action when they travel to Field Mill to play top-of-the-table Mansfield Town.
