Sunderland legend names unexpected Newcastle United man to England’s Euro 2024 team
Jermain Defoe believes Callum Wilson will join England’s Euro 2024 team, if he stays fit.
This season has been frustrating for the 32-year-old Newcastle United player due to another injury-plagued campaign. Wilson is a good Premier League striker when he is on the pitch, but setbacks have proven to be his downfall.
The striker, who is presently out due to a pectoral rupture, has missed 13 Premier League games this season and is set to return in May. That has prompted calls for Newcastle to sign a new number nine this summer.
Wilson’s last appearance for England was a 3-1 victory over Scotland last September. A lifetime desire of playing in the World Cup was realized last season, but Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins now rank ahead of him in the pecking order.
In an interview with The Mirror, former Sunderland star Defoe refused to rule Wilson out of contention. He remarked, “I believe if he (Wilson) can keep himself healthy, he can score goals. I’ve always admired Callum, and I played alongside him briefly at Bournemouth.
