Andros Townsend believes one Spurs target is comparable to Harry Kane in a number of ways.
Andros Townsend feels Harry Kane and rumored Tottenham target Ivan Toney share many similarities, with the former Spurs winger believing that the Brentford star should travel to the Euros ahead of Ollie Watkins.
Toney’s departure from Brentford at the end of the season looks to be an open secret, with the centre-forward expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the summer transfer window.
The 27-year-old will enter the final year of his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium in June and has made no secret of his desire to move on to a larger club (Sky Sports).
The rumor connecting Toney with a transfer to Tottenham shows no signs of abating, with The Sun claiming earlier this week that it may be a three-way fight for the player between Spurs, Chelsea, and West Ham, after Arsenal’s interest in the striker dwindled.
Even Alasdair Gold mentioned on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast last week that, given Toney’s contract issue, the Lilywhites may see this summer as an ideal time to strike for him.
Is Ivan Toney an ideal Harry Kane replacement?
Townsend feels the Brentford player is akin to his former Tottenham teammate Kane in more ways than one.
When asked if his link-up play puts him ahead of Watkins in England’s Euros pecking order, Toney told talkSPORT: “Yes, I believe so. I believe he’s quite excellent at it. He does it naturally for his club, yet he is not the fastest.
“I think he’s more like Harry Kane than Watkins.” Nobody in the Premier League works more than Ollie Watkins – racing into gullies, chasing a losing cause, creating something out of nothing, and scoring goals.
“But I think Ivan Toney has a slight edge when it comes to taking hold of the ball, diving 10 yards deeper, and having others sprint by him.
“I believe he’s particularly adept at connecting with those kind of guys. Again, I believe he just gets the nod in that regard if that’s what Gareth wants, or will he go for something else, perhaps?”
Spurs Web Opinion
Toney is undeniably a top-tier striker who is quite comparable to Kane, but he may not be the best type of centre-forward for Postecoglou’s system. The Australian favors mobile number nines who can alter positions and make runs behind the opposing backline.
