The manager of QPR, Marti Cifuentes, stated that he held himself accountable for the loss against Sheffield Wednesday, another struggling team.
At Loftus Road, goals from Djeidi Gassama and Antony Musaba handed the second-bottom Owls a well-earned win.
“I’m very disappointed, but especially with myself,” Cifuentes stated. Upon reflection, I realized that I had not adequately prepared the players for the type of game I expected it would be.
“We weren’t very excellent. It was a poor showing. Not only am I upset with the outcome, but also with the game and our (lack of) effort. It’s a really dismal day.
“I accept accountability for this setback. One outcome won’t make me lose faith in the guys.
However, Cifuentes also hinted that Rangers could have been a little too complacent following their recent run of back-to-back victories, which put them six points clear of the relegation zone and apparently on the verge of safety.
They were still in serious jeopardy after the setback, with only four points separating them from the bottom three.
“That’s the constant risk, not only in football but in life in general. We have a tendency to relax occasionally, and those are really risky periods,” he stated.
“Just when you think you are doing great, football always serves as a harsh reminder that it is extremely tough to perform at anything less than 110%.
“We made every effort to convey to them throughout the course of the week that this was not an easy game—possibly the hardest of the season.
“Sadly, I was unable to persuade my players that we required that level of intensity today because it appeared like Sheffield Wednesday was playing for their lives.”
