Male college basketball is a coach’s medium more than any other major sport in North America. Mike Krzyzewski, the former head coach of Duke, is one among the coaches who have kept the sport relevant even in the years this century when its star power has declined.
But a new generation of coaches is gradually taking over for Krzyzewski’s group. Coach Dan Hurley of Connecticut, a basketball lifer whose bookish appearance belies his near-hysterical on-court expressionism, looks ready to lead them after winning back-to-back national titles.
In a recent edition of Basketball and Beyond, his Sirius XM radio program, Krzyzewski gave Hurley guidance regarding his new position as the public face of the sport
“… Make use of your voice,” Krzyzewski stated. “College athletics and the game itself are not doing well. You are intelligent, have amazing qualities, and represent an amazing university.”
The Huskies defeated San Diego State 76-59 in 2023 to win the crown, and they now have a perfect record of six national titles overall after their 75-60 victory over Purdue on Monday.
You’re the game’s leader right now. The NCAA match,” Krzyzewski remarked. “May God continue to bless you. And congrats, dude.”
