Sheffield United will lose two points at the beginning of the next Championship season, plus an additional two points suspended; the Blades will also be penalized in terms of points for their next season in the EFL; Penalties pertain to the 2022–2023 season
When Sheffield United returns to the EFL the following season, they will lose points.
The Blades will receive a two-point punishment from an independent commission at the beginning of the next Championship season. Additionally, the club will have two more points suspended following their failure to make payments to other teams during their 2022–2023 promotion season.
“The sanction relates to the 2022–2023 season, when the club defaulted on a number of payments to other clubs,” an EFL statement said. If the club doesn’t make any payments to another club as required under a transfer or compensation agreement for more than five business days after the payment deadline, the suspended points deduction will be initiated.”
The EFL further said that the total number of defaults that resulted in the suspension exceeded 550 days.
The club has committed to reimburse the EFL for £310,455.
“Sheffield United notes today’s statement from the EFL regarding breaches by the club of regulations 52.2.3 and 52.2.4 in the 2022–2023 season,” a statement from Sheffield United said.
“It has been decided that the Blades will receive a two-point punishment to start the following season in which the club is under the EFL’s authority. The club argued in the proceedings that before the club was informed of the referral, the relevant amounts that the EFL had depended upon had either been renegotiated with new future payment dates adhered to, or had been paid in full on many instances just days after they were originally due.
