Prior to their last League One match against Northampton Town, Barnsley has stated that Head Coach Neill Collins has departed the team.

Collins departed Oakwell before the season’s last game because Barnsley decided to take action following a five-game losing streak.

The League One season’s last matchup between Barnsley and Northampton is scheduled for this Saturday, April 28. The Tykes are now ranked fifth in the standings.

The team has been in the top six for the majority of the season, but they need to win to guarantee a spot in the play-offs at the conclusion of the league season.

Barnsley will be eliminated from the play-offs entirely if Northampton wins one or three points at Oakwell and two of Lincoln City, Oxford, and Blackpool win their respective season-ending matches.

“Neill has been extremely professional throughout the period with which I have worked with him; he has done everything he can to push the team in the direction we all want Barnsley to go,” stated Mladen Sormaz, Sporting Director. Over the time I’ve dealt with him, he has always acted with dedication and professionalism.

But since we have a pivotal season finale coming up, we believe now is the ideal moment to make a shift. We appreciate all of the supporters and ask you all to come out and support the team on Saturday when they play Northampton. In the upcoming days, supporters will receive an update.

Martin Devaney, the first team coach, will substitute for the Northampton game.

Collins joined Barnsley in July of last year, having spent the previous five years in the United Soccer League with the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Michael Duff, who left South Yorkshire at the end of the previous season to take a job at Swansea City, was succeeded by him.

In his 52 games as Barnsley’s manager, he won 24 of them. However, since the Tykes gave up an injury time equalizer to Bolton Wanderers and then suffered a 5-1 home loss to Lincoln City, they have lost steam and are now in danger of missing out on the play-offs entirely.
