Unexpected: Cincinnati Bengals Sign Two Quarterbacks To New Contracts Before 2024 Season; Disregard Backup
The Cincinnati Bengals revealed on Thursday that they have finalized two quarterback trades just days before the 2024 NFL Draft got underway. They made a tremendously bad deal when they signed a former draft selection and extended a guy.
Last season, Jake Browning had a significant role.
Due to Joe Burrow’s wrist injury, backup quarterback Jake Browning started seven of the Bengals’ nine games last season. At the end of the season, he completed 171/243 passes for 1,936 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Despite an inadequate offensive line that struggled to keep Burrow upright for the majority of the season, he performed very well.
Browning made a two-year contract signing with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Bengals announced that they had re-signed Browning, an exclusive rights free agent, to a two-year contract that will keep him in Cincinnati until the 2025 campaign:
Prior to the 2021 season, Browning, a second-year athlete from the University of Washington, signed a contract to join the Bengals practice squad. He was a member of Cincinnati’s practice squad in 2021 and 2022 before making nine appearances in 23 (seven of which were starts). As a starter, he guided the group to a 4-3 record.
Due to the ERFA tag, he is eligible for the league minimum even if the Bengals withheld the details of the transaction. For a guy who has proven he can be a productive backup in the NBA, it’s an unjust and awkward arrangement. Before agreeing to the two-year contract, Browning was scheduled to make $915,000 for the 2024 season, according to Spotrac. He might so earn $1.8 million in Cincinnati over the course of two seasons.
Logan Woodside was signed by the Bengals.
The Bengals not only retained Browning but also acquired a well-known player to their squad. Logan Woodside, their former 2018 draft selection, was signed by them to a one-year contract:
In 2018, the Bengals selected Woodside (6-1, 213), a fifth-year player from the University of Toledo, in the seventh round. He completed four of seven throws for 34 yards over his 13 career games with the Tennessee Titans (2020–21) and Atlanta Falcons (22–23).
Three quarterbacks are available for the Bengals to train with during their summer regimen.
