LMA Chairman Is Former Celtic and Ireland Boss
Following a headhunt by his fellow professionals, former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill was chosen the Chairman of the League Managers Association. The 72-year-old hasn’t been a manager since 2019, when he temporarily assumed leadership of Nottingham Forest, the team he played for two European Cups.
A few years ago, the Irishman also served as the manager of the Republic of Ireland, working alongside former Celtic midfielder Roy Keane. Following Giovanni Trappatoni’s resignation as manager in 2013, the two guys with Celtic ties began leading the Irish to their first major event. They succeeded in earning a spot in the 2016 European Championship, and in a significant shock for O’Neill as manager, they defeated both Italy and Germany in the competition.
However, Martin O’Neill is most known for his outstanding work at Celtic Park, where he spent five trophy-filled seasons. O’Neill was the one who lifted Celtic out of the financial abyss of the 1990s and began to crush the financially strapped Ibrox club.
Being the only man since the great Jock Stein to win a historic treble in his debut season, the Irishman set the stage for our extraordinary success since the year 2000.
The outgoing Howard Wilkinson, who held the position for thirty years, was happy to hand off the reins to the former manager of Leicester City and Aston Villa. He expressed his pride at being elected the next LMA Chair by his fellow managers. As stated by Herald Sport, “I am succeeding Howard Wilkinson, who has oversaw the LMA’s growth for over 30 years and served its members with great distinction, dedication, and passion.”
