New York Giants Linked to Signing 4,400-Yard Running Back with 40 Touchdowns

The New York Giants lost Saquon Barkley to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, and despite signing Devin Singletary and waiting until the fifth round to draft Tyron Tracy from Purdue, the backfield could use some excellent depth.

As OTAs and minicamps approach across the league, several veteran running backs remain available who are more than capable of providing quality carries in an offense that now features explosive wide receivers on the perimeter, such as first-round pick Malik Nabers and second-year burner Jalin Hyatt, discouraging defenses from loading the box.
According to Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker, the New York Giants are an excellent fit for former Cleveland Browns running back Kareem Hunt.

“Devin Singletary has run for 800-plus yards in each of the last three seasons,” writes Zucker on the Giants’ backfield scenario. “But is not a direct replacement for Saquon Barkley. Eric Gray made 23 total touches as a rookie. Tyrone Tracy Jr., a fifth-round draft pick in 2024, didn’t make his full-time running back debut until 2023.

“Although Singletary is clearly the No. 1 guy after signing a three-year, $16.5 million contract, New York would benefit from bringing in one more vet, and Hunt would slot in nicely as the backup.”

How Kareem Hunt Fits With the New York Giants

It’s easy to understand why Hunt may be the Giants’ perfect short-yardage back; after all, according to Pro Football Focus, Hunt averaged 2.17 yards after contact per carry last season.

Meanwhile, because Hunt is expected to command a contract near to the veteran minimum at this point in the offseason, he may provide substantial value as a change of pace with Singletary, Gray, and Tracy.
