Newcastle United’s main player needs only one more goal to reach a new Premier League record.

Newcastle United are only one strike away from smashing their own Premier League goalscoring record in 38 games.

The Magpies, who scored five against Sheffield United to relegate the Blades over the weekend, now have 74 top-flight goals for the season. Newcastle last reached that amount during the 2001/02 season, under Sir Bobby Robson.

If the north east side scores against Burnley on Saturday or in any of their next three games, they will have set a new record for themselves. This comes despite a season marred by injuries and dismal outcomes.

Other important seasons in black and white include the 1995/96 season, when Kevin Keegan almost led his team to the Premier League title, but they only scored 66 goals. Newcastle scored 73 points the next year, as they finished second again.

Newcastle scored 84 league goals in the 1993/94 season, but only played 42 games. Sir Bobby’s team finished fourth in 2001/02 and has held the record for the most goals scored since then with 74.

The fact that Newcastle has been scoring freely this season but is nowhere near the title-chasing group demonstrates how difficult it has been at the other end of the ball compared to this time last year.

Last season, Eddie Howe’s starting back five of Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn surrendered the joint-fewest goals in the Premier League (33), along with champions Manchester City. This time around, Newcastle has shipped 55, with four games remaining.

Newcastle’s 5-1 victory against Sheffield United at the weekend, combined with their 8-0 triumph in the reverse game, means they now have the record for the most goals scored against an opponent in a single season (13). Manchester City established the previous record in the 2019/20 season, outscoring Watford by 12 goals.
