Breaking News: He has been sacked today.
Rene Maric, a former Leeds United coach, is one of the candidates for the vacant Sunderland post this summer, having departed Elland Road when Jesse Marsch was fired.
The Championship has been extremely harsh on managers this season, but some clubs have recently discovered some hidden treasures.
Kieran McKenna is a good example at Ipswich Town, while Enzo Maresca, Carlos Corberan, Liam Rosenior, Michael Carrick, and Danny Rohl have all progressed from assistant to top management possibilities in the Championship.
Sunderland are interested in former Leeds United coach Rene Maric, according to reports.
It was reported at the end of April that Sunderland, which is currently without a permanent head coach, has been keeping an eye on Bayern Munich U19 manager Rene Maric as a possible candidate.
According to i News, the 31-year-old is now on the Stadium of Light shortlist to succeed temporary coach Mike Dodds.
Maric, of course, was a member of Jesse Marsch’s coaching team at Elland Road before the American was fired in February 2023 following a string of dismal results.
Will Leeds get promoted?
Maric emerges as an appealing coaching candidate.
It was difficult for Maric or any coach to stand out or build a completely favorable name for themselves during Marsch’s tenure since Leeds had a terrible era with performances that were far from satisfactory in the Premier League.
Maric is presently Bayern Munich’s U19 coach, and he recently spoke about his time in West Yorkshire with Training Ground Guru.
“With a young roster, we wanted a coach with a track record of developing talent. Finally, it is difficult to determine why things did not work out. There are some things you may state, such as the predicted goal figures were higher than the rest indicated. In terms of total running and sprinting, we remained in the league’s top three.
“I believe only three teams had positive net spend: Leicester, Leeds, and Manchester City. City won everything, and Leeds and Leicester were relegated. However, you may always utilize these criteria to explain things.
“But things didn’t work out. I can just talk about myself, and I’m quite honest. In retrospect, there are things I wish I had done better. Obviously, I tried my best. I was unable to accomplish it. Finally, when I was dismissed, I attended the next two games and sat in the stands. I met several wonderful folks and remain in touch with some of them.
“There was also some upheaval in terms of the high-ups around that time; it’s only usual when you’re selling a club; every choice adds to the discussion. Would you like to do it now? Do you do it later? And then everything can slow down. That is normal. That is part of the situation, not necessarily the individuals.
“It’s simply unfortunate that such a historically significant team with a large fan base couldn’t finish the season. I’m still quite disappointed. I keep note of every result. I spoke with the new coaching staff, offering criticism and ideas while also wishing them success. And I believe they’re doing an excellent job for a wonderful club.”
Sunderland might be on a shrewd appointment.
