Sunderland Handed Boost In Pursuit Of Attacking Target As Prize Tag Name

Sunderland have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Chris Willock as the Championship winger will be released from his contract at Queens Park Rangers.

Major work will need to be done at the Stadium of Light if the Black Cats are to make a push for promotion next season. Following on from a sixth-place finish in the 2022/23 campaign, the club ended up in 16th this term, 17 points below the play-offs and merely six above the relegation zone.

The board will need to find the right manager to take them over the line next year, having had three different head coaches over the past ten months. However, high-quality additions to the first-team squad are also of paramount importance if Sunderland are to challenge for promotion in the 2024–25 season.

One name who has been linked with a move to the Wearside outfit is Willock. Roker Report revealed two weeks ago that Sunderland are in talks with the 26-year-old as the club looks to add further depth to the attacking department.

Now, the Black Cats have been handed a further boost in their hopes of signing the former Huddersfield Town loanee as Willock’s contract is set to expire, with QPR expected to announce his departure very soon.

Norwich City are also in the running for his signature, as per journalist Alan Nixon, who is claiming that the Canaries are hoping to sign the Arsenal academy product even if they fail to earn promotion back to the Premier League.

Willock has had an impressive campaign with QPR this season, making his 100th start for the club on Saturday as Marti Cifuentes’ men ended the season in style with a 2-1 victory away at Coventry City. This was also his 39th appearance in all competitions for the London outfit and seemingly his last.

Writer’s View

Willock would be a really good signing for Sunderland. He is a player with a lot of experience, who can score goals and is also a solid, playmaking winger as well. However, there is quite a lot of interest in him this summer.

A player of Willock’s quality being a free agent doesn’t happen too often and so it’s not surprising that a number of clubs are interested in acquiring his services. If Norwich manage to clinch promotion to the Premier League, they may be favourites.
