Browns CB Greg Newsome wants to stay in Cleveland ‘for life’.

Earlier this summer, reports circulated that the Cleveland Browns were shopping one of their best cornerbacks. With Denzel Ward under contract for the long term and Martin Emerson still on his rookie contract, the signs were pointing to

General manager Andrew Berry promptly dismissed the allegations, stating he and the Browns were delighted with Newsome. Not long after, he put his money where his mouth was and purchased the fifth-year option on Newsome’s rookie contract. This means the former first-round choice is under contract for the following two seasons, with a guaranteed salary of $13.77 million in 2025.

Newsome recently attended the Northeast Ohio Girls High School Flag Football Championship Tournament at Cleveland Browns Stadium, where he spoke about his contract status. The fourth-year defensive back said he felt “blessed” and that, while the club hasn’t addressed plans beyond 2025, he wants to stay with the Browns “for life.”

“Extension-wise, we haven’t really talked about that,” he remarked via Eric Edholm. “I’m just focused on getting us as high as we can this year and whatever happens after that. However, I’d love to be a Cleveland Brown for life.”

Browns have a potentially formidable secondary.
Teams most certainly quizzed Berry about Cleveland’s secondary during the Scouting Combine, which might have sparked the reports. It would make sense to see if the GM was prepared to trade with anyone given the Browns’ deep secondary.

Newsome is joined by Denzel Ward, another first-round pick, and Martin Emerson, who was not selected to the Pro Bowl in 2023. Their quality extends to the safety corps, as Juan Thornhill, Grant Delpit, Rodney McLeod, D’Anthony Bell, and Ronnie Hickman all prove to be viable choices.

Cleveland also has some good depth, with Newsome’s old teammate Cam Mitchell, who played effectively as a rookie in 2023. They’re also throwing Myles Harden into the mix, and he may be a late-round steal in 2024.
