Coventry City must adopt a £15 million position on the player amid interest from Ipswich Town.
Ipswich Town are one among the clubs interested in signing Coventry City’s Ben Sheaf. The Sky Blues should take a firm stand this summer.
Coventry City fell out on the play-offs and now face the potential of players like midfielder Ben Sheaf getting Premier League attention.
Sheaf’s good performances warrant a £15 million price tag, which is consistent with previous transactions and demonstrates Coventry’s bargaining prowess.
With a contract until 2026, Coventry must maintain their valuation, despite offers from Ipswich, Luton, and Fulham.
Coventry City had a dismal Championship campaign, losing four of their final five games, with QPR winning 2-1 in the final game of the season.
The Sky Blues had a sluggish start to the season, but as they did in 2022/23, Mark Robins’ side quickly picked up the pace and moved into top six contention.
However, Coventry’s poor start to the season proved costly, as they dropped nine points short of a play-off spot.
The summer is a time for the club to rebuild and for Robins to enhance his squad, but like with last summer, it appears that the Sky Blues have players on their books who have piqued the interest of the opposition, most notably midfielder Ben Sheaf, as teams circle.
Ipswich Town are among the sides interested in Coventry’s Ben Sheaf.
Sheaf has been at Coventry City permanently since the summer of 2021, after spending the 2020/21 season on loan from Arsenal.
The 26-year-old has been at Arsenal since 2014, when he came as a young youngster from West Ham United.
The midfielder failed to break through at Arsenal, but a loan with Doncaster Rovers quickly placed him on the map, and that’s when his career took off.
His value has risen during his four seasons with Coventry, and this season he has taken on the role of being perhaps the club’s most significant player following the exits of Gustavo Hamer and Viktor Gyokeres.
Sheaf has lived up to expectations, and he appears to be a highly sought-after player this summer.
According to Alan Nixon’s Patreon account, Coventry’s lack of promotion has sparked interest in Sheaf among teams.
According to the article, Ipswich Town, Luton Town, and Fulham have all shown an interest in the 26-year-old ahead of the summer.
Nixon also mentions that Sheaf turned down the opportunity to join the Hatters during the last transfer window, but that hasn’t stopped them from seeking a deal once more. Luton’s Premier League status, whether it continues or not, is reported to have no bearing on a deal for Sheaf, but it would benefit them given that Ipswich and Fulham will play in the top level next season.
Nixon also claims that Fulham’s interest in the midfielder is only an option for them; he is not a priority at this time.
Coventry must take a £15 million stake.
This is not the first time a Coventry City player has piqued the interest of Premier League clubs, nor will it be the last.
The Sky Blues have impressed in recent seasons, prompting rivals to keep an eye on their top players from a distance.
It is no different for Sheaf, but as with other players, Coventry must take a tough stand on the midfielder. They will want him to continue at the club, and with a deal that extends until summer 2026, they are in a good position.
Money speaks, but the Sky Blues midfielder has established himself as one of the top players at his position in the Championship in recent years, as seen by his 2023/24 achievements, and his team must guarantee he is adequately paid if he leaves.
