Former Sheffield Wednesday star of the 1990s set to become League Two boss.

According to the latest rumors, former Sheffield Wednesday academy product Dean Brennan is in negotiations with League Two club Swindon Town about becoming their next manager.

The Irishman never appeared for Sheffield Wednesday but went on to play for Luton Town, Stevenage, and AFC Wimbledon before retiring in 2012 and transitioning into coaching.

Brennan formerly managed Hemel Hempstead Town, Billericay Town, and Wealdstone before being named as head coach of non-league team Barnet in 2021, taking over from Champions League winner Harry Kewell early in the 2021/22 season.

Brennan led the Bees to an 18th-place finish in the National League in his first season in charge, and in his second season, he guided the London club to the playoffs. Unfortunately, Barnet succumbed to Boreham Wood in the quarterfinals

Nonetheless, Brennan’s side finished second this season, but due to the brutal nature of the play-offs in England’s fifth tier, Barnet was denied promotion to the English Football League once more after losing heavily to Solihull Moors in the semi-final.

Brennan is now connected with a move away from the club. According to the Swindon Advertiser, Swindon Town is in talks with the 43-year-old about becoming the next manager at the County Ground, after interim leader Gavin Gunning.

It is uncertain if Gunning would continue on if his compatriot is named as the Robins’ next manager, after serving as caretaker manager since Michael Flynn was sacked of his responsibilities in mid-January.

Writer’s perspective

This might be a decent appointment for Swindon, bringing in a manager who has had considerable success in one of the most difficult divisions to be promoted from, following the route of Notts County, who recruited Stuart Maynard earlier this season. Maynard served as Brennan’s deputy manager at Wealdstone.

Barnet were one of the league’s finest entertainers this season, with the second-highest offensive record in the National League, so Swindon fans should anticipate lively football if the former Sheffield Wednesday player takes over this summer.
