Bristol City has released midfielder Matty James, who has previously played for Barnsley, Leicester City, and Manchester United.
The 32-year-old will depart Ashton Gate when his contract ends this summer, as it has been confirmed that terms will not be extended. He will depart the club with attacker Andreas Weimann and fellow midfielder Andy King, who has retired.
James is a familiar face in South Yorkshire, having had two loan periods with Barnsley. He joined the Reds in January 2017, following a temporary move from Leicester City under Paul Heckingbottom.

He confirmed a return to Oakwell in October 2021, ten days after Gerhard Struber’s departure. He appeared in 33 games for Barnsley throughout his two stays there.
Bristol City manager Liam Manning said of the leaving players: “They’ve all been tremendous servants to the club. They are all excellent pros that have left their impact at Bristol City. I wish them the greatest best in the future.”
James began his career at Manchester United after rising through the junior systems at Old Trafford. He failed to make a professional breakthrough and moved to Leicester in 2012. He spent nine years with the Foxes, including two loan spells at Barnsley.
His lengthy affiliation with Leicester ended in 2021, when he joined Bristol City. He is expected to leave the Robins after 115 appearances.
