Former Detroit Tigers infielder Zack Short has been dealt to the Atlanta Braves, and he will soon play for his third major league team in 2024.
Short was designated for assignment earlier this week, and the Boston Red Sox moved him to Atlanta for monetary considerations.
Short, who turns 29 next month, was taken off waivers by the New York Mets in November after the Tigers cut him from the roster after the 2023 season.
Short made the Mets’ Opening Day team after a solid spring, but he played little once the season started, going 1-for-9 and starting just three games.
Short was acquired by the Red Sox after the Mets designated him for assignment two weeks ago. Short’s time was equally limited, as he went 0 for 7 in two games.
Short is unlikely to play much for the Braves. He replaces Luis Guillorme, who was traded to the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday after going 3-for-20 in six weeks with the Braves.
In 2020, the Tigers acquired Short from the Chicago Cubs as part of a trade for outfielder Cameron Maybin. He spent portions of three seasons in the major leagues with Detroit, mostly as a utility infielder in 2023.
Short batted.204 with a.603 OPS (73 OPS+) in 253 plate appearances in 110 games last season. He played all over the field and frequently came in late in the game as a defensive substitution. Short also pitched six innings in lopsided games, surrendering four runs and 12 hits.
