Reds Reportedly Sign Another Top Star, Considering Controversial Decision.

The Cincinnati Reds needed three days to revisit their earlier decision on whether or not to bring up Mike Ford. The Reds allegedly re-signed Ford to a major league contract after declining to pick his contract when the slugger opted out of his minor-league deal over the weekend.

Ford was one of the Reds’ top performers throughout spring training. Ford hit.455 and had a 1.213 OPS in ten Cactus League games for Cincinnati. That wasn’t enough to secure Ford a seat on the airplane from Goodyear to Cincinnati, so the Reds sent him to Triple-A Louisville, where he continued to pummel baseballs.

Ford hit.297/.381/.539 with the Louisville Bats. Ford has had reverse splits his whole career, and with Jordan Montgomery on the mound tonight for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Reds fans should expect to see the 31-year-old in the starting order.

After the news broke, the issue became: who would the Reds send down? While some expected Christian Encarnacion-Strand to be optioned to Triple-A, the Reds placed the first baseman on the 10-day injured list with a right ulnar styloid fracture.

Other alternatives would have included designating Conner Capel for assignment. On Tuesday, however, the Reds added Capel to the 40-man roster. Jeimer Candelario has struggled as well at the start of his Reds career, but the team’s biggest free agent signing has run out of minor league alternatives. To create place for Ford on the 40-man roster, the Reds transferred Brandon Williamson from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list.

At the very least, Reds fans may celebrate that president of baseball operations Nick Krall recognizes the issue and is striving to address it. The Reds’ batting has been terrible of late, as the squad has only scored four runs in the last four games.
