“An attractive proposition”- Pundit responds to Liam Rosenior, Birmingham City news

Birmingham City were demoted to League One despite a late victory.
Despite a great start in the Championship, management changes and bad form contributed to their demise.

There is interest in Liam Rosenior as a prospective next manager for the Blues, who are facing competition.
Birmingham City were relegated to League One after a catastrophic 2023/24 Championship season, despite defeating Norwich City on the last day.

On the last day, three points were insufficient for the Blues to ensure survival, as Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday, and Plymouth Argyle all won.

The St Andrew’s side began the season on a high note, finishing in the play-off places after a 3-1 victory over local rivals West Brom in October under John Eustace.

However, Blues owner Tom Wagner and CEO Garry Cook decided to relieve Eustace of his duties, replacing him with former Derby County manager Wayne Rooney.

Rooney witnessed a 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in his first game in charge of Birmingham on October 21st, which regrettably set the tone for the remainder of the 38-year-old’s stay, as he would go without a win until November 25th.

The England veteran was fired by the Blues on January 2nd, after winning only two of his 15 games in charge, a disastrous record that left the team on the verge of relegation.

Rooney’s dismal term as manager insured that his replacement would face a difficult challenge in keeping the Blues in the Championship, and unhappily, Tony Mowbray, who followed Rooney, was forced to quit his position in mid-February due to sickness, putting Gary Rowett in charge on an interim basis.

However, Rowett was unable to keep the Blues in the second division, as they were relegated to League One, while Eustace maintained Blackburn in the Championship.

The St Andrew’s side is now looking for a new manager, and according to Football Insider, they are interested in former Hull City manager Liam Rosenior.

Pundit responds to Blues’ ties to Rosenior.

Former England midfielder and broadcaster Carlton Palmer told Football League World exclusively that Birmingham City are keeping an eye on Liam Rosenior’s predicament.

“It appears like Tony Mowbray will be unable to return to Birmingham City for the start of the season, which is extremely disappointing news for both the club and Mowbray.

“I have a lot of respect for Tony Mowbray as a person, and it’s unfortunate to see him go through this. We all hope he recovers quickly from his sickness.

“So, due to the sacking of John Eustace and the situation with Wayne Rooney, Birmingham City was relegated to League One.”

“Birmingham City will be an appealing prospect for anyone since they should have the resources to go on and win promotion back to the Championship.

“Whether they can persuade Liam Rosenior to move down to League One with a project remains to be seen.

“It would be an appealing proposition; you would expect Birmingham City to be at the top of the table, vying for promotion back to the Championship next season.”

“But I’m sure Liam Rosenior has cut his crop in the Championship, he’s shown he’s capable of managing in the Championship, so I think he’d like to stay in the Championship in some form, but Birmingham would be an appealing proposition for him, and I’m sure Tom Wagner could tempt Liam if he’s given the tools to do the job and get them promoted back on the first try.

“As I have stated, I believe there will be a lot of interest in Liam Rosenior; the next position he takes is critical for him and his career, but you can’t say anything other than what a tremendous job he did at Hull.

“Whichever club gets him needs to bring him in right away so he can get started on his task.

“If it’s Birmingham City, then there’s a lot of work to do with the financial fair play with them going down to League One, players leaving and the recruitment of players for the season, but this would be an unbelievable appointment if Birmingham City could pull this off.”

Blues will have to fend off rival interest in Rosenior.
