Charlton Athletic have announced that they have invoked a clause in Thierry Small’s contract to keep the defender for next season.

Our website exclusively revealed that the League One club have exercised their option to extend the 19-year-old full-back’s Valley contract by a another year.

Small has been linked with a transfer away from Charlton, with Derby reportedly interested. The South London Press was informed over the weekend that the Addicks had not received any contact from the newly promoted Championship team.

Small, who joined Charlton at the beginning of February after being released by Southampton, was a key member of Nathan Jones’ team in the build-up to last season.

Charlton technical director Andy Scott told the club’s website: “We needed to activate the one-year extension by May 15, which we did, and we’re delighted that Thierry will be with us next season.

“He has done really well since joining us. We gave him a long-term contract offer because we believe he has a lot of talent and potential. He can learn and grow under the tutelage of Nathan Jones and our team, contributing to the club’s success next season and beyond.

“We will continue negotiations with Thierry and his agent when he returns from his break.”
