West Brom poised to make contract decision as Carlos Corberan insists on average age point.

West Brom have a large number of players out of contract and are poised to make choices after missing out on promotion.

West Bromwich Albion’s senior thinktank confronts a critical few days of decision making as they draft their retain and release lists following the end of the season. Albion have up to 21 players out of contract between their senior and Premier League 2 teams, while loanees Pipa and Mikey Johnston will return to their parent clubs. Andi Weimann is now a free agent, having been released by his parent club Bristol City.

Albion’s league status was uncertain until Friday night, but after being beaten 3-1 by Southampton over two legs of their play-off semi-final, Carlos Corberan and his players’ valiant efforts throughout the Championship season were in vain, and they will spend a fourth consecutive season in the second tier of English football.

Albion will have the opportunity to refresh their ranks and, perhaps more importantly, decrease their squad’s average age; six of the players whose contracts are about to expire are 30 or older. While that squad number may be on the minds of some who want to see their team seem more youthful, Corberan has always maintained that the players’ talent and professionalism are more essential than their age.

He recently used the example of Real Madrid’s victory over Manchester City in the Champions League quarterfinals, a two-legged tie that the Spanish side won on penalties at the Etihad Stadium, with the veteran pair of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric relying on experience and quality in their midfield roles.
