Derby County has been linked with a deal for Oxford United’s play-off final winner Joshua Murphy.
The Rams are one of several teams interested in the former £11 million winger, whose brace against Bolton at Wembley last weekend secured them promotion to the Championship. Portsmouth and a number of Championship and League One clubs are interested in the 29-year-old, who is out of contract and available on a free transfer.
Murphy, who formerly played in the Premier League with Cardiff, has had an exceptional season, scoring 10 goals and playing an important role in Oxford’s promotion to the second tier. Oxford will want to maintain one of their finest assets, but they will face stiff competition from a number of teams offering higher salaries.
However, in an interview with sportsboom.com, the former England Under-20 is enjoying his time in the United States and has suggested that he is eager to sign a new contract with the club.
“I’d love to be in these colours next year,” Murphy added. “I’m satisfied and content at this club. I am still loving it. I’m excited for the gaffer (Des Buckingham); it’s been an up and down period since he’s arrived. But I think he’s a terrific coach and manager, and he got what he deserved. I am just delighted for him and the guys.
“I’m confident we’ll perform well in the Championship next season. We play a fantastic brand of football and have an interesting collection of players.”
When questioned about his star winger’s future and if they would keep him, Us manager Des Buckingham replied, “I hope so. I told him that when we were raising the trophy. We will do everything we can to keep Josh. We want nice people in this club. He is an excellent footballer who matches our style of play.
“If we can keep him and he wants to stay, we will do everything we can and it won’t be for the lack of trying.”
