The status of a West Bromwich Albion, Portsmouth, and Derby County prospect was unknown, but the issue has been resolved.
Josh Murphy, who scored twice for Oxford United in Sunday’s thrilling League One play-off final against Bolton Wanderers, has been linked with moves to several Championship teams.
The 29-year-old’s brace at Wembley Stadium capped a fantastic season in which the U’s were promoted to the English second division after defeating Bolton 2-0. Murphy scored his ninth and tenth goals of the season, which piqued the interest of possible suitors.
Murphy’s potential suitors include West Brom, Portsmouth, and Derby County. The Baggies are aiming to add striking depth, while Pompey and the Rams want to strengthen their forward lines after promotion.
Murphy cast doubt on his future earlier this week when he hinted at a move to a level above Oxford. “I want to play at the highest level I can. “I believe I owe it to myself, my family, and the club,” Murphy told the Oxford Mail.
“We’re in the championship now, so we’ll see what happens. I simply want to get my mind off things. It’s been a long, grueling season, and all I want to do is have fun.”
But just days later, Murphy appears to have changed his mind, disappointing every team interested in signing him. “I’d love to wear these hues next year. “I’m happy and settled at this club, and I still enjoy it,” Murphy told SportsBoom.
“I’m excited for the gaffer [Des Buckingham]; it’s been up and down since he’s been here. But I think he’s a terrific coach and manager, and he got what he deserved.
“I’m thrilled for him and the lads, and I’m confident we’ll do well in the Championship next season. “We play a good brand of football, and this is an exciting group of players,” Murphy said.
