West Bromwich Albion and Stoke City are about to make a key decision on the future, which may favour West Bromwich.

Josh Windass, a West Bromwich Albion transfer target, is expected to sign a contract to stay at Sheffield Wednesday despite recent uncertainty over his future, according to sources.

The Sheffield Star revealed in May that the Baggies and West Midlands rivals Birmingham City were keeping an eye on Windass’ status at Hillsborough, as the playmaker was scheduled to be out of contract at the end of June after helping the Owls pull off a remarkable Championship escape. Furthermore, the site said that Stoke City and Derby County were both interested in signing him.

On Monday, Football Insider reported that Coventry City and Hull City have joined the battle for the 30-year-old, who scored seven goals and assisted twice in 28 games to guide Danny Rohl’s team to safety.

However, the Sheffield Star has provided an update on Windass’ pursuit this summer, disappointing his many suitors, stating that the attacker is set to sign a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday, keeping him at the club for a sixth season after joining from Wigan Athletic in 2020

West Bromwich Albion must now consider alternative recruitment targets ahead of the summer transfer window beginning next Friday. Carlos Corberan seems intent on adding more offensive talent to the group in the coming months. Brandon Thomas-Asante was the club’s best striker this season, however he only scored 12 goals in all competitions.

The offensive line is clearly an area that should be improved. While Thomas-Asante’s goals were still vital for West Bromwich Albion during the season, 12 goals will not be enough to get the club promoted next season.

Corberan requires a teammate who can share the workload with the former Salford City player. Windass would not have been this sort of player, but his potential new contract with Sheffield Wednesday allows the club to go out and acquire more productive strikers this summer.
