Sheffield Wednesday Announce The Signing Of Derby County Top Star Sheffield Wednesday have announced an agreement to sign Max Lowe on a free transfer upon the expiration of his Sheffield United contract on July 1st. Lowe, who has spent the last four years on the books of The Blades, crosses the Steel City divide in search of regular football, having started just four times for Chris Wilder’s side last campaign. A myriad of injury troubles has limited his minutes in recent years, so he’ll be hoping to hit the ground running at Hillsborough.
Comfortable at left back, left wing-back and in holding midfield, the 27-year-old is a versatile option for Danny Röhl to add to his squad as they look to improve on their 20th placed finish in last season’s Championship.
Lowe also boasts youth international experience in his early career having made appearances for England at Under-16, 17, 18 and 20 level while breaking through at Derby County. The new man at Hillsborough is certainly now an experienced operator having spent time on loan at Shrewsbury Town,
Aberdeen, and Nottingham Forest where he started 19 times for Steve Cooper’s side in their 2021/22 promotion winning campaign. He is set to become just the third man to cross both the Steel City and East Midlands derbies, having made appearances for Derby,
Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United. He would join David McGoldrick and Terry Curran in the exclusive club. Lowe could provide some healthy competition for the vastly experienced Marvin Johnson who started 25 of Wednesday’s games last season, largely operating at left wing-back. The club exercised an option to extend the 33-year-old’s contract last month. He becomes the Owl’s second free transfer signing in a matter of days following the announcement of an agreement to sign Ben Hamer also on July 1st, as his contract expires at Watford.
Writer’s View: Max Lowe can certainly be a very useful member of a Championship squad, having proved that with Nottingham Forest and Sheffield United between 2021 and 2023. However, signing a player who has started just four times in the previous season is always a risk so Wednesday supporters will be hoping it’s one that pays off. Having only narrowly escaped relegation in a turbulent season last time out,
there will be little expectation on Danny Röhl and his team to be pushing for anything like the play-off positions. Solidity and safety will be the target this time around and playing in a team with little expectation and getting regular minutes could be just what the player needs to restart a once very promising career.
