Anthony Rizzo, the starting first baseman for the New York Yankees, has a fractured arm and has been placed on the Major League Baseball injured list.
The 34-year-old Rizzo, a left-handed hitter, will probably miss more than a month.
After going through a hitting slump for the whole season, Rizzo had just started to show some life in his bat.
Ben Rice, a catcher/first baseman from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, has been picked by the Yankees to take Rizzo’s position on the roster.
Scouts and the club have high hopes for Ben Rice. The Yankees could decide to remain with him and forego trying to arrange a deal, but only time will tell.
Rice, a 25-year-old left-hander, has only appeared in 11 Triple-A games prior to getting called up to the main Yankee team. In 50 plate appearances, he was hitting.333/.440/.619/.1.059 with three doubles and three home runs. He had failed ten times.
