Second League Charlie Wyke, a former Sunderland striker who left Wigan Athletic at the conclusion of his contract, is in negotiations with Bradford City about coming back to Valley Parade this summer.

When the 31-year-old’s contract expires at the end of this month, he will be free to sign with any team. Alan Nixon claims that although his terms were previously beyond of Graham Alexander’s side’s price range, they are now within reach for the League Two team.

In addition to playing for Bradford City from January 2017 to August 2018, Wyke has also had stints at Middlesbrough, Kettering, Hartlepool United, AFC Wimbledon, Carlisle United, Sunderland, and Rotherham United.

The attacker joined Sunderland for an estimated £400,000 after making 62 appearances for the Bantams, where he scored 23 goals and contributed 13 assists.

A wise decision for Bradford City?
During his time at Bradford, Wyke left a lasting impression, proving that he was a capable goal scorer and so earning a promotion to Sunderland.

The ability of Andy Cook and Charlie Wyke to play together up top may be in doubt.

Though neither of these attackers is as swift as some of the other possibilities that may be available to the League Two team, it’s still a nice problem to have to fit two goal scorers with experience at the level into your squad.

Both Vadaine Oliver and Jake Young are still under contract, but because both were out on loan during the previous season, it’s possible that the former may make room for the latter’s comeback.

Bradford may have a greater chance of winning promotion this year than they did the last one. Since Alexander took over, a number of the league’s top players, including Stockport County and Wrexham, have advanced only to be replaced by failing teams.

Although Chesterfield will probably wish to aim for consecutive promotions, the league’s general caliber may not be as high as it was in previous years.
