The goal of the Las Vegas Raiders is to recover from a turbulent 2023 campaign. The Raiders had many quarterback changes, an 8-9 season, and the firing of their head coach.
The squad is hopeful that the 2024 season would be different, but a recent quarterback report indicates that this season may be more of the same.
In 2024, the Raiders in Las Vegas could have to make another significant switch at quarterback.
Under center, the Las Vegas Raiders aren’t exactly in a good spot, as both Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew will be vying for the starting job come training camp.
While some have a better opinion of O’Connell than others, it doesn’t seem the Raiders see him as their franchise quarterback based on what head coach Antonio Pierce has spoken over the offseason.
Is it possible that Las Vegas, with its unsteady signal-caller position, may move one of O’Connell or Minshew midway through the 2024 NFL season?
According to Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report, yes.
Ballentine mentioned the Raiders as a team that would be willing to deal certain players this next season. O’Connell and Minshew were two names that made the list.
In 2024, will the Raiders be competitive?
The Raiders generated a lot of excitement in the latter part of the previous season as Pierce succeeded Josh McDaniels as head coach and guided Las Vegas to a 5-4 record.
Under Pierce’s leadership, the Raiders played a novel form of smashmouth football in 2023, capped with an Arrowhead Stadium victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas.
However, is it realistic to anticipate much from Las Vegas in 2024?
In actuality, the Raiders lack established offensive skill save for wide receiver Davante Adams, and they have other weaknesses in their squad.
With the 13th choice in the NFL Draft, tight end Brock Bowers was chosen by Las Vegas. Although many have called Bowers a generational talent, he has not yet played a snap in the NFL.
Josh Jacobs, a running back, left the Raiders in free agency as well.
To strengthen the defensive line, Pierce’s team did acquire Christian Wilkins, a defensive lineman, but again, it remains to be seen how Las Vegas can score points come September.
Maybe O’Connell will play some amazing football this upcoming season and take everyone by surprise. After all, he did cap off his first year with a bang.
But it will be difficult to put a saddle on the Raiders going into 2024 unless we see more from O’Connell consistently.
