The HBCU Director of the University of Memphis has been hired.

COURTESY: MEMPHIS UNIVERSITY, Memphis, Tennessee With effect from July 22, 2024, Dr. Ed Scott has been appointed by the University of Memphis as its new Senior Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. Scott comes to Memphis with prior experience as an athletics director from Morgan State University, where he worked as deputy athletics director at the University of Virginia until

January 2022. On Friday, June 28, there will be a press conference when Scott will be presented. Once everything is finished, the media will be informed. Dr. Scott and his family are quite welcome to Memphis, according to U of M President Bill Hardgrave. “The purpose of this comprehensive search was to identify a visionary, revolutionary leader who could assist us in realizing Tiger Athletics’ full potential. Among the numerous outstanding applicants, we ultimately identified Dr. Scott as the frontrunner. He is a welcome addition to the Tiger Family, and we are excited to work with him to pursue our bright sporting future. Sports medicine, strength and conditioning,

nutrition, sport psychology, men’s basketball, baseball, swimming and diving, track and field, cross country, and diversity, equality, and inclusion have all fallen within Scott’s purview at Virginia. As a special advisor to the head football coach, he also helped with football oversight. Before coming to Virginia, Scott was Director of Athletics and Vice President at Morgan State from October 2016 until taking on his present position at Virginia. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics honored him the 2021–22 Cushman & Wakefield Athletic Director of the Year after he led Morgan State to previously unheard-of heights of success.

Scott stated, “I have the University of Memphis on my radar and it is a destination for me.” The chance to do great things is here as we go ahead in a new age of intercollegiate athletics with outstanding

student-athletes, coaches, and staff supported by a proud and driven city. I express my gratitude to President Hardgrave for providing me with this chance. I’m thrilled to be a part of Tiger Nation with my family. At Morgan State, Scott was the first sports director to have a position in the President’s Cabinet in addition to managing the department’s daily operations and its 14 Division I programs. Along with launching Morgan Bear Club,

 

the department’s first yearly fund, he also arranged Morgan State’s first-ever full gear contract with Under Armour®. Under Scott’s direction, a number of Morgan State facilities had renovations or enhancements, amounting to over $25 million in upgrades to sports and recreational facilities during his five years in office. Dave North, the chair of the Athletics Director Search Advisory Committee and a member of the University of Memphis Board of Trustees, stated, “When we started this search,

I said we were looking for an innovative, bold leader who will bring our athletic program into the next era, and Ed Scott is that leader.” As a brilliant centerfielder for Albany University, Scott was selected as an America East Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, a CoSIDA Academic All-American,

and an America East First Team All-Conference selection. Scott received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Albany University and his doctorate from the School of Community and Public Affairs at Binghamton University. Tia is the daughter of him and Tara.
