A league source tells Fred Katz of The Athletic that the Knicks have signed rookie guard Tyler Kolek to a four-year, $9.06 million contract.
With the use of the second-round selection exemption, the deal was consummated. According to Katz, Kolek will receive the highest pay available for the first three years, but the fourth year is not assured (it’s also a team option).
After Portland received three future second-round picks, New York was able to obtain the rights to Kolek, the 34th overall selection.
Kolek, a 23-year-old point guard, averaged 15.3 points per game, 4.9 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.2 steals per game on.496/.388/.851 shooting in 31 games (33.0 minutes per game) during his stellar senior year for Marquette in 2023–2024.
NBA free agency’s early wins and losses
On Sunday, the NBA free agency period began at 6 p.m. ET. Ever since, clubs all across the league have been rushing to add players to their squads by using their cap space. While some teams have made significant progress, others have gotten worse, and yet others have decided to remain the same. These are the first three victors and losers of free agency. victors Mavericks of Dallas With the arrival of Klay Thompson,
Dallas addressed a need. There’s no denying the four-time NBA champion’s shooting ability, even though he may not be as good as he once was as a two-way player. With Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic as two of the team’s best penetration players,
Thompson gives the Mavericks perimeter scoring and floor spacing. The Mavericks are now more adaptable in the half-court thanks to Thompson’s arrival, which also provides Irving and Doncic with a superior outlet when opposing defenses falter. He will have a big part to play going ahead if he can stay healthy and offer some defensive versatility. The Philadelphia 76ers Paul George, maybe the most gifted athlete available as a free agency, was signed by the Sixers. With George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia has unexpectedly added a third “big three” member. Philadelphia ought to be regarded as a serious contender in the Eastern Conference for the upcoming season if Embiid and George can maintain their health.
George remains a superb two-way wingman. He can score from any spot on the court and defend several spots. At every key position, Nick Nurse currently has an All-Star and a deep bench. The goal needs to be a possible deep postseason run. Oklahoma City Thunder Isaiah Hartenstein joined Oklahoma City on a three-year, $87 million contract. He was the best center available on the free agency market going into the summer. When you take into account that the Thunder acquired Alex Caruso through a trade, their roster has significantly improved. A possible vulnerability for Mark Daigneault’s club going into the 2024–25 campaign is difficult to identify.
Additionally, the Thunder recruited Nikola Topic, an excellent rookie with the potential to become a top-tier rotation player. For a team on the verge of winning the Western Conference, the summer got off to a strong start overall. Those who fail Milwaukee Braves While teams around them have progressed, the Bucks have done nothing. All but one member of the Boston Celtics’ championship-winning team has remained with the team. Michael Bridges was added by the New York Knicks. George also strengthened the Sixers’ roster.
Taurean Prince is the lone noteworthy newcomer to the Bucks as of right now. Milwaukee’s 2023–24 campaign was challenging. It is difficult to imagine them challenging for a title the next season if they don’t start making changes to their present roster. Los Angeles Clippers After agreeing to a contract extension with Kawhi Leonard, the Clippers lost George in free agency. James Harden and Leonard remain on Ty Lue’s squad. George,
nevertheless, served as their “big three”‘s backup scorer and defender. The Clippers front office has pivoted with great skill. However, losing one of your best two players and receiving nothing in return is a serious setback. Right now in the early part of the summer, the Clippers are undoubtedly losers. Denver Nuggets Caldwell, KentaviousPope has won two NBA championships. He is the kind of role model that head coaches like.
For Denver, losing him to the Orlando Magic is devastating. He hasn’t been replaced in their lineup. Without much cap space, it’s difficult to find a diversified wing that can compete at the highest level. The first week of free agency has seen the Nuggets go worse. They were unable to hold onto their title. They will probably have trouble returning to the NBA Finals the following season if they are unable to make some improvements in the upcoming months.
