Sending the Yankees five sincere messages, Luis Severino
It’s the first time the two teams have played since Luis Severino left the Bronx for Queens in free agency, even though he isn’t pitching for the New York Mets against the New York Yankees in the Subway Series this week. Before Wednesday’s game, Severino talked to the media about his time with the Yankees.
According to Yankees Videos on X, Luis Severino stated, “I mean for me, I gave everything that I have, I mean I was not looking to get injured.” “My only goal was to compete.” And it’s like I had an injury while playing baseball. I wasn’t outdoors riding a motorbike, jumping out of a helicopter, or doing anything similar. I was engaged in some baseball. And I gave the Yankees everything I had. I adore the Yankees, therefore in the end, there are no bad sentiments. I’m here because they offered me the chance to be somebody, and I adore the men out there. You know, I gave it all I had out there.
Severino made his Yankees organization rookie debut in 2015 after working his way up through the levels. Because of his effectiveness, he was considered the staff’s ace from the beginning of 2017 and remained so until the end of 2018. After that, Severino signed a contract with the Bombers that bought out his arbitration years, but he continued to battle with ailments. Severino lost a lot of time in 2019 and only made a late comeback to join the playoff rotation.
Severino learned he required Tommy John surgery in 2020, and a number of injuries—including one to the groin—delayed his return in 2021. He joined the Yankees bullpen in late 2021 to help them squeak into the wild card. Severino then had a strong start in 2022 but missed a lot of time before coming back towards the end of the season and pitching in the postseason once more.
Severino let the team down in 2023, his final season wearing pinstripes. Many believed at the time that he needed a change of scenery. Following a difficult start to the season, he is currently enjoying a breakout season with a hot Mets squad.
In 2024, Luis Severino rebounds for the Mets.
According to FanGraphs, Severino has thrown for 90.1 innings total with a 3.29 ERA in 15 starts this season. He signed a one-year contract with the Mets during the summer, so if he continues to play well and stays healthy, he should be able to negotiate a good deal in the next offseason.
Severino is coming off a strong performance on Sunday Night Baseball against the Chicago Cubs, where he pitched six scoreless innings to help the Mets win.
The Mets as a team will want to defeat the Yankees on Wednesday at Citi Field in order to return to.500 overall.
