Much of the conversation following the Los Angeles Lakers’ selection of Bronny James with the 55th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft centered on the extent of nepotism that played a role in the choice. Remember, the Lakers could have signed Bronny as an undrafted free agent and used their draft selection to sign another talent who might not have signed with the Lakers otherwise.

In any case, the Lakers’ choice to choose Bronny in the first round guaranteed that they would not lose LeBron James’ kid to another club. Many are still unsure about Bronny’s status as a rookie who might not be fully prepared to make the move to the NBA, though.

The 19-year-old will be competing with the world’s top basketball players after playing just 25 games during his collegiate career. But how much of a rookie will Bronny play on a Lakers team that is hoping to win an NBA Championship?

One NBA insider claims that the Lakers have a somewhat strange plan with their new youngster. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Bronny will likely spend the first week of the NBA season with the Lakers. There, he will have the opportunity to play with LeBron, making history as the first father-son basketball team in the history of the league.

Update: Lakers Select Bronny James with No 55 Pick
However, Bronny is anticipated to play in the G-League for the remainder of the season after the first week, where he will be able to obtain lots of playing time against other NBA aspirants. There are “no expectations,” according to Woj, for Bronny to be a regular member of the Lakers’ rotation. Instead, he will be spending more time with the South Bay Lakers development squad.
