San Antonio Spurs Rising Star Tipped As Early Favorite For Major NBA Award in 2024-25
Although French big man Victor Wembanyama lost to Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Defensive Player of the Year contest a few months ago, many people were astonished to see a rookie finish second. Next season, however, is a different scenario, with the San Antonio Spurs player likely to win the award.

During the 2023-24 NBA season, Wembanyama finished second behind Gobert for the Defensive Player of the Year title. Despite the setback, the French star’s performance last season was nothing short of amazing, as he equaled the record for the highest DPOY finish by a rookie.
Gobert earned 72 first-place votes, while Wembanyama got 19. The Spurs star’s defensive abilities were on full show, as he averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in the previous season.
At only 20 years old, Wembanyama has already established himself as a formidable force on the defensive end of the court. With his outstanding height, length, and athleticism, he is destined to compete for the DPOY title for many years ahead. The Spurs’ supporters and the NBA world as a whole are looking forward to Wembanyama’s ongoing growth and development, as he seeks to take the organization to new heights in the coming years.

San Antonio gained major players in the summer, including Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, and Stephon Castle, through the draft. Along with strengthening the roster’s offensive performance, particularly with the arrival of the Point God, Wembanyama is anticipated to continue his strong defensive play.

Although the NBA is not expected to return until later this year, it is easy to picture Wemby becoming a more formidable defensive force. With the Spurs’ strengthened roster, there’s every reason he’ll earn DPOY next season. If he does, the entire league will have to pay note, as Wembanyama’s two-way game will be a challenge for most competitors, particularly as he hits his peak.
