On Saturday, the Baltimore Orioles placed outfielder Heston Kjerstad on the seven-day disabled list with concussions after he was struck in the helmet by a pitch less than 24 hours earlier.
Kjerstad was originally scheduled to start against the New York Yankees on Saturday, but was yanked from the lineup minutes before the game. Just before the game, the Orioles announced his transfer to the disabled list. In response, Baltimore promoted outfielder Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk.
With only a few games left before the All-Star break, the Orioles sent starting pitcher Cade Povich to Norfolk and promoted right-hander Vinny Nottoli from the same club.
Meanwhile, the Yankees placed catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day disabled list with a left quad strain and promoted catcher Carlos Narváez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Kjerstad was hit around the ear flap by a 97-mph fastball from New York’s Clay Holmes in the ninth inning of Friday night’s game. The incident resulted in benches clearing, but the Yankees won 4-1.
New York manager Aaron Boone described his post-game meeting with Orioles manager Brandon Hyde as “fine.”
