Klay Thompson emerged as one of the most prominent names to test the free agency market this summer, which surprised many. When it became clear that Klay was leaving the Golden State Warriors in free agency, other suitors waited for their chance to pitch the perennial all-star shooting guard. Klay’s free agency decision ultimately came down to the Dallas Mavericks or the Los Angeles Lakers.
Klay ultimately chose to sign with the Mavericks over the Lakers, which confused many in the NBA. Many assumed Klay opted to play with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving over LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, there was supposedly a lot more to it.
It was recently discovered that one of the main reasons Klay chose the Mavericks over the Lakers was because Los Angeles refused to offer him a starting role. Dallas was definitely willing to do this for Klay. The issue is, how much will the Lakers come to regret this potential misstep?
Will the Los Angeles Lakers regret losing out on Klay Thompson?
Given that the Lakers have yet to make any substantial additions to their roster this summer, with the exception of their two picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, it’s easy to see why Los Angeles may be feeling some remorse.
However, I don’t believe we can say that definitively until we see how the remainder of the offseason plays out for the Lakers. If the regular season begins and the Lakers struggle to get going, we can honestly say the Lakers may have blown it in their chase of Klay Thompson.
Given the Lakers’ lack of depth in the backcourt, it’s surprising that they didn’t give him the starting nod to open the season. But perhaps the Lakers are planning something greater that we aren’t aware of.
In any case, it will be intriguing to watch how Klay performs in the next phase of his career with the Mavs. Based on that, we’ll have a better sense of how severely the Lakers may have screwed up.
