The New York Knicks have plenty of reasons to look forward to the 2024-25 season. Jalen Brunson continues to deliver on his promise; he signed a more team-friendly contract to help the club win, and the front staff brought in Mikal Bridges to boost the team’s prospects.

However, although the Knicks’ Villanova core is intriguing, there is one major lack on the roster: frontcourt depth. Julius Randle’s absence due to shoulder surgery in early April was felt as the team lost a close series against the Indiana Pacers in the second round.

Isaiah Hartenstein was a valuable member of the Knicks’ squad before deciding to relocate to Oklahoma City. With Mitchell Robinson still striving to return to form, the Knicks’ main option for acquiring a big man is through trades.

While there are a few big players connected to the Knicks, one in particular has the potential to widen the team’s offensive strategy like never before.

The Milwaukee Bucks’ Brook Lopez is an excellent trade target for the New York Knicks.

SNY’s David Vertsberger authored a detailed article regarding which big guys the New York Knicks should recruit as they prepare for the 2024-25 season. While Clint Capela is at the top of the Hawks’ list of potential trade targets, he believes Lopez can provide a different dynamic for the Knicks in return for Miles McBride and Precious Achiuwa.

Lopez is still a competent defender at 36 years old, and while his rebounding stats aren’t particularly impressive, he boxes out well to allow teammates to get the boards. He’s also a 35.4 percent shooter from three on five tries per game over the previous six seasons in Milwaukee, offering some space from a position the Knicks haven’t had to this point, which may open up a lot of offensive opportunities for Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle.

Lopez was a valuable contributor to the Bucks last season, and his stats were comparable to his efficiency when the Bucks won the 2021 NBA Finals. He concluded the season with 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists, shooting 48.5%, 36.6%, and 82.1%. He also demonstrates his effectiveness as a defender by preventing 2.4 block attempts each game.

If the New York Knicks go after Lopez, they will get a dependable big man who will stretch the field for their Villanova core to function inside while also being a great defender under the basket.
