Before Tiger Woods’ former caddie for the Tour Championship, Hank Haney has retracted his criticism of Rory McIlroy’s caddie and asserted that the golfer’s ally is the ideal candidate for the bag. Remarks Hank Haney made against Harry Diamond, caddy for Rory McIlroy, have taken an unexpected turn for the worst.

At first, Haney had criticized Diamond for making a bad club decision on the 15th hole at the US Open, which caused McIlroy to lose the lead and let Bryson DeChambeau win.

After calling the move a “bad decision,” Haney shared a video of McIlroy throwing his club and expressing his displeasure, which stoked more criticism. McIlroy had shown symptoms of irritation during the BMW Championship.

Haney, meanwhile, has subsequently had second thoughts and is now applauding Diamond’s impact on McIlroy’s game. Haney stated on X, “No, I think his caddie is great for him.” “I thought they erred on #15 at the US Open, not that he wasn’t excellent for Rory. I genuinely think that everyone can make mistakes, which is why I genuinely love buddy caddies.”

This comes after McIlroy himself went to Diamond’s defense against the idea that friendship-related pressures prevent pals from being good caddies. Since Diamond was McIlroy’s best man at his wedding, the two have a long-standing bond.

After Haney criticized McIlroy’s caddy, the golf instructor retaliated against the player. Declaring, “Smylie has been in that position once, and I love Smylie, and he was out there with us on 18,” the Northern Irishman spoke up for his longtime buddy and caddy. Harry doesn’t say or do anything less than other caddies, just because he isn’t as outspoken or loud with his statements.”I only hope that these individuals who criticize me when things don’t go my way would stop saying nice things when they do. So where were they when I won the two FedEx Cups I won with Harry, the two Ryder Cups, Dubai earlier this year, Quail Hollow, or anything else?

“When I win, they never come to compliment Harry on his work; instead, they are the first to point fingers when we lose. In the end, they just don’t exist. The arena is not where they are. They do not make the decisions or make the shots.”I once heard someone tell me that if you wouldn’t accept these people’s advise, you wouldn’t take their criticism either. Wouldn’t seek advise from Hank Haney, for sure. I guess Harry and I both know better than Smylie, even if I still adore her.”

The golfer’s stay at the BMW Championship wasn’t without incident; on the seventeenth hole, he made headlines when he threw his club into the water, only to quickly retrieve it. On the ninth hole at Castle Pines, McIlroy was spotted smashing his driver in half out of annoyance after a misplaced tee shot found itself in the water.

After upsetting the odds at the US Open, McIlroy had a lackluster showing at the BMW Championship, but he will get another chance to prove himself at the Tour Championship.
