Many were taken aback by the Los Angeles Rams’ unexpected trade of linebacker Ernest Jones to the Tennessee Titans. Along with the Titans’ sixth-round pick in the same NFL Draft year, the Rams also acquired a fifth-round pick in return. The rumours that Jones was given permission to look into alternatives with other teams preceded this move. Monday, he did not show up for practice, which fueled rumors about his future. Jones deleted the social media message he had originally made rejecting any request for a trade. The head coach of the Rams affirmed that Jones had not requested a trade.
It was said that the club made a calculated move in trading Jones. The coaching staff thought it would benefit the Rams in the long run. Throughout his three seasons with the Rams, Jones has been an invaluable member of the club. He recorded a sack in the championship game and was instrumental in the Rams’ triumph in Super Bowl LVI.
In the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones—who is about to enter the last year of his rookie contract—was selected. Though he had intended to finish his Rams contract, he will now pursue his career in Tennessee.
Midway through his debut season, Jones established himself as a starter with the Rams, and in the following years, he routinely tallied more than 100 tackles. In 2023, he added 4.5 sacks to his numbers and established a franchise record with 145 tackles. The Rams will have difficulty finding a replacement for Jones’ expertise at linebacker. This season, the team’s defensive lineup gap will have to be filled by younger players.
