With their 2024 season opener against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the Chicago Bears formally ushered in a new era.
Although they prevailed 24–17, neither rookie quarterback Caleb Williams’ nor rookie linebacker Rome Odunze’s debuts were particularly memorable.
According to Jordan Schultz, Odunze only had one reception for 11 yards before leaving the game in the fourth quarter due to what seemed to be a knee injury. The Bears think he may have suffered a Grade 1 sprain, and he plans to get a second opinion.
Although Williams, who is regarded as a generational talent, has received the most of the attention on the Bears, Odunze also has some star potential.
He caught 75 passes for 1,145 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior at the University of Washington in 2022. On 81 receptions, he increased his output to 1,640 yards and thirteen touchdowns the previous season.
He is one of three really talented wideouts that Chicago has this season that earned the All-Pac-12 first team both seasons.
They also boast the six-time Pro Bowler Keenan Allen and D.J. Moore, one of the game’s most underappreciated wide receivers.
While Odunze heals from his injury, Moore—who has at least 1,100 receiving yards in four of the previous five seasons—and Allen should keep Chicago competitive.
Next Sunday, when Chicago visits the energetic and skilled Houston Texans, they will be up against a formidable opponent.
