Tomorrow, let him go: Opinion: West Brom should fire the loser who had less touches than Palmer vs Swfc.

On Saturday, Danny Rohl’s team defeated West Bromwich Albion 3-2 away at Sheffield Wednesday, handing the Baggies their first loss of the Championship season.

After winning all but one of their second-tier games this season until losing at Hillsborough, the West Midlands team will now have to deal with an uncomfortable feeling.

At the end of the game, Carlos Corberan would have been disappointed with his team’s performance since West Brom, who had prided themselves on being a resilient club during the campaign, had let three goals.

The worst performers for West Brom vs Wednesday

It’s not like Wednesday was doing exceptionally well coming into this midday match; prior to Corberan’s team visiting town, they had dropped three of their previous four league games.

The typically robust Baggies defence had a significant off-day in South Yorkshire, with Darnell Furlong even committing an own goal in a terrible opening 45 minutes for his club, as West Brom were two goals down after only 23 minutes of activity.

Although the Baggies showed some resilience to tie the game at 2-2 in the closing minutes, the hosts’ late goal was scored by Anthony Musaba due to careless defense, resulting in a rare setback for West Brom in the early Championship rankings.

Karlan-Grant-West-Brom

Not even West Brom enjoying most of the possession at 70% could help them pull off another league victory, as Alex Palmer had to pick the ball out of his goal three times, despite Wednesday only registering an overall xG of 1.19 throughout the game.

Away from the leaky shot-stopper, new signings Torbjørn Heggem and Uroš Račić also performed poorly. Račić could only muster eighteen accurate passes from holding midfield positions, and Heggem struggled to contain the likes of Josh Windass, who was patrolling forward for the hosts.

Karlan Grant put on another forgettable performance following an otherwise good start to the campaign, meaning that someone else may take his place for West Brom’s test against Middlesbrough tomorrow.
