After losing to the New York Giants 1-3 on Thursday Night Football, they are in dire need of a victory. They are hoping that a mini-bye would give them enough time to be ready for the Seattle Seahawks, who are a scary 3-1 club. It’s hardly hyperbole to say that another setback would virtually end New York’s season. Teams don’t just comeback from such awful beginnings to make the playoffs, and they surely don’t do so with uncertainty under center and below-average play on both sides of the ball. But two surprising wins and a 3–3 record? That’s enough to create a sense of optimism – and hope is a dangerous thing in this league. Though it’s possible that New York won’t be able to do so in the absence of standout receiver Malik Nabers.
After an outstanding effort in the Week 4 defeat, Nabers was sidelined with a concussion. He was the main subject of the team’s first injury report of the week on Wednesday, appearing under the “Did Not Participate” designation.
Nobody has been ruled out of Sunday’s game by New York as of yet. The Giants’ greatest question is, of course, Nabers. Attempting to play a sophisticated defense without Nabers is certain. It is almost hard to replace a target share that leads the league. That task is further increased by Robinson joining Nabers on the injury report, even though the slot receiver is still anticipated to go. Similar to last week, New York’s challenge will be to contain a potent passing attack without its best defensive back (at least in the first half). The secondary will again be behind the eight ball if Phillips is out. Nobody in this defensive backfield has equaled his ability to play the run, produce turnovers, and perform effectively in coverage. The Giants’ secondary depth would also be eroded by Jackson’s absence from the Week 5 game.
Should Singletary be unable to travel, youngster Tyrone Tracy Jr. may have the chance to take the position. Tracy has progressed a little faster than expected despite her minimal output, and Singletary suffered tremendously in the Week 4 defeat. It may become his job to lose if he adds an explosive element to the ground game. On Sunday, Burns is expected to play for the fans, while Adams is expected to make a victorious comeback from injured reserve, if only on special teams.
