Breaking News: Craig Berube, the head coach of the Leafs, meets with management to formally announce the signing of Depth Forward
After a strong training camp, it seems like Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is under pressure from head coach Craig Berube to find a way to sign Steven Lorentz.
The preseason gave new Maple Leaf head coach Craig Berube a chance to get to know his players and get them used to his playing philosophy. Every player has a distinct function that is vital to the group’s success.
Berube debuted his fourth line, which featured PTO invitee Steven Lorentz and returning players David Kampf and Ryan Reaves, in the team’s victory over the Detroit Red Wings in the season’s last game. What most thrilled Berube about the trio’s performance was not only that they connected for a goal—Lorentz scored his first of the preseason—but also their entire play.
It is likely that this fourth line will open the NHL season together following such a strong performance. But in order to do this, Lorentz’s PTO deal would need to be upgraded to an NHL contract by the Maple Leafs. Berube’s remarks undoubtedly sounded like a plea to Treliving and associates.
Lorentz has shared his long-held passion of playing for his local team and stated that he wants to play in Toronto. For him and his family, winning a cup with the Maple Leafs would be a unique accomplishment.
Big, powerful, and a tireless worker, Lorentz fits Berube’s concept for his fourth line wonderfully even if he isn’t particularly noted for his scoring.
The Maple Leafs are currently above the salary cap and have too many players, especially forwards, so a trade could be required if they sign Lorentz. Prior to the NHL season opening between the Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens on October 9, fans should keep an eye out for roster changes.
