Yu Darvish’s effort was not offensively supported by the San Diego Padres during their NLDS defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
After tapping the “PS” patch on his uniform, Yu Darvish concentrated on his performance.
Despite his best efforts, Darvish was unable to overcome the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night despite his impressive performance in honor of the late San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler.
In the pivotal Game 5 of their NL Division Series, the Dodgers defeated the Padres 2-0 as their offensive faltered. The Padres were returning home to consider what went wrong and make plans for the upcoming season, just one week after it appeared that San Diego was moving on to the next round.
After he gave up three hits in 6 2/3 innings, including two home runs, Darvish remarked via an interpreter, “Obviously, it’s a big game and you’re given the ball to pitch in these big games and for me it was about wanting to do this for Peter Seidler.”
Following a dismal 2023, the Padres decided not to re-sign NL Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell and dealt Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. But when Dylan Cease, a right-hander, signed from the Chicago White Sox, they made a big improvement.
The offensive-minded Padres were a good fit for rookie center fielder Jackson Merrill, while Jurickson Profar enjoyed his greatest season in his 11 major league years. After missing all of 2022 because of a wrist injury and a PED suspension, Fernando Tatis Jr. made a comeback to All-Star status this year.
Even though the Padres defeated the Dodgers to win the season series, they lost the final two games and were unable to finish the NLDS. For the last 24 innings, San Diego did not score any runs.
“We failed to score runs through hitting,” slugger Manny Machado remarked. “On the pitching side, they performed a fantastic job.” Giving credit where credit is due is essential. We just were unable to string hits together. We had some opportunities, we couldn’t push through and we fell short.”
