The New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2, with Artemi Panarin recording his eighth career hat trick.

The New York Rangers defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-2 on Thursday night, and Artemi Panarin recorded his eighth career hat trick.

In the first four games of a season, Panarin scored more than one point, making him the first player in Rangers history to do so. He used the power play to score two goals. In addition, Vincent Trocheck assisted on all of Panarin’s goals and scored one during a power play.

Victor Mancini scored another goal, while Jonathan Quick made 29 saves in his season debut.

With two victories this week, the Rangers have now defeated the Red Wings five times. On Monday night, New York defeated Detroit 4-1 at home.

Detroit’s goals came from Moritz Seider and J.T. Compher, while Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot was substituted out in the second

time after giving up five goals.

With four players, including Panarin and Trocheck, scoring at least 11 goals, the power play finished third in the league the previous season. It appears to be as powerful this season, with Panarin leading with three goals on the power play.

Due mostly to their 25th-place goal-allowing (3.33), Detroit narrowly missed the playoffs the previous season. They have a 1-3 record this season and have allowed 15 goals in three defeats.

The Rangers were given two penalties in the first half, giving the Red Wings a 5-on-3 advantage. Detroit, which has only managed one goal in 13 power-play attempts this season, was unable to capitalize, though. Panarin scored New York’s first goal on goal just over a minute after the Rangers had dispatched the penalties.
